〜ている (te iru) — Progressive / State

[Verb て-form] + いる

Explanation

〜ている expresses an ongoing action (progressive) or a resulting state. It is one of the most frequently used grammar patterns.

Examples

今、本を読んでいます。

いま、ほんをよんでいます。

I am reading a book now.

東京に住んでいます。

とうきょうにすんでいます。

I live in Tokyo. (state)

もう昼ご飯を食べています。

もうひるごはんをたべています。

I have already eaten lunch. (result)

Notes

  • Action verbs + ている = ongoing action (食べている = eating).
  • Change-of-state verbs + ている = resulting state (結婚している = is married).
  • Casual: ている → てる (食べてる).
