を (wo) — Object Marker

[Object] を [Verb]

Explanation

The particle を (pronounced 'o') marks the direct object of a verb — the thing that receives the action. It connects the object to the verb that acts on it.

Examples

水を飲みます。

みずをのみます。

I drink water.

水 (water)を (object)飲みます (drink)

本を読みます。

Notes

  • を is only used as a particle (never in regular words).
  • It is written with the hiragana を (wo) but usually pronounced 'o'.
  • を also marks the place you move through: 公園を歩く (walk through the park).
