Explanation
The particle を (pronounced 'o') marks the direct object of a verb — the thing that receives the action. It connects the object to the verb that acts on it.
Examples
水を飲みます。
みずをのみます。
I drink water.
水 (water)を (object)飲みます (drink)
本を読みます。
ほんをよみます。
I read a book.
日本語を勉強します。
にほんごをべんきょうします。
I study Japanese.
Notes
- を is only used as a particle (never in regular words).
- It is written with the hiragana を (wo) but usually pronounced 'o'.
- を also marks the place you move through: 公園を歩く (walk through the park).
