は (wa) — Topic Marker
[Topic] は [Comment]
Explanation
The particle は (pronounced 'wa') marks the topic of the sentence — the thing you are talking about. It sets up the context and is followed by a comment about the topic.
Examples
田中さんは先生です。
たなかさんはせんせいです。
Mr. Tanaka is a teacher.
田中さん (Mr. Tanaka)は (topic)先生 (teacher)です (is)
日本語は面白いです。
にほんごはおもしろいです。
Japanese is interesting.
私は日本人ではありません。
わたしはにほんじんではありません。
I am not Japanese.
Notes
- は is written with the hiragana は (ha) but pronounced 'wa' when used as a particle.
- Do not confuse は (topic) with が (subject). は marks what you're talking about, が marks who/what does the action.
