〜て (te) — Te-form (Connecting / Request)

Explanation

The て-form (te-form) is one of the most important verb conjugations in Japanese. It connects verbs, makes requests (〜てください), and forms progressive tense (〜ています).

Examples

ここに座ってください。

ここにすわってください。

Please sit here.

今、食べています。

いま、たべています。

I am eating now.

朝起きて、顔を洗って、朝ご飯を食べます。

あさおきて、かおをあらって、あさごはんをたべます。

I wake up, wash my face, and eat breakfast.

Notes

  • て-form rules for う-verbs: う/つ/る→って, む/ぶ/ぬ→んで, く→いて, ぐ→いで, す→して.
  • る-verbs: drop る and add て.
  • Irregular: する→して, くる→きて, 行く→行って.
