いる / ある — To Exist

[Thing] が [Place] に いる/ある

Explanation

いる (iru) and ある (aru) both mean 'to exist' or 'there is.' Use いる for living things (people, animals) and ある for non-living things (objects, plants, concepts).

Examples

猫がいます。

ねこがいます。

There is a cat.

テーブルの上に本があります。

テーブルのうえにほんがあります。

There is a book on the table.

兄弟がいますか。

きょうだいがいますか。

Do you have siblings?

Notes

  • いる = living things, ある = non-living things.
  • ある is also used for events: 明日テストがある (There's a test tomorrow).
  • The が particle is typically used with いる/ある, not は.
