Explanation
The particle が marks the grammatical subject of a sentence. It identifies who or what performs the action or is described. Use が when introducing new information or when the subject is the focus.
Examples
猫がいます。
ねこがいます。
There is a cat.
猫 (cat)が (subject)います (exists, for living things)
誰が来ましたか。
だれがきましたか。
Who came?
水が欲しいです。
みずがほしいです。
I want water.
Notes
- Use が when answering 'who' or 'what' questions.
- が is used with ある/いる (to exist), 好き (like), 欲しい (want), and できる (can do).
- は is for known information, が is for new information.
